March 17, 1899, St. Patrick's Day. Arose quite early, but feel somewhat tired, owing to the climb up the mountains last night. Hailing and raining until 5:00 AM, cleared off and is very pleasant. At 7:30 called “all hands up anchor” and got underway, going ahead full steam at 7:45. Squally and passing rain showers. Entered sea reach at 9:50. At 10:30 Cape Pillar dead ahead - (Entrance to straits from Pacific Ocean). Set clocks back 20 minutes. At 9:30 had quarters and exercised at physical drill. Barometer rising. At 1:50 took departure and set course W3/4 N. Light breeze during the afternoon. Had quarters at 4:30 and exercised at signals and setting up drills. I take no part in signal drill, but it's for the benefit of my health that I exercise at physical drill. Towards evening, very cool. Moonlight. Wrote to J.
